The Glory of Celadon Celadon ware is a type of china ware with a glaze ranging from peacock green to pastel green in color. It has a history of more than 3,500 years, originating in the Shang dynasty (c.]800 -1400 B.C.) and reaching its peak of perfection during the Sung dynasty (A.D. 960- 1279). The characteristic greenish hue of this china is produced during the firing process, when the heat reaches a high 1,260 Celsius, by minute quantities of a ferric compound contained in the glaze. But chemical instability makes it difficult for this process to be carried out successfully, so most of the celadon ware sold on market these days does not use the original ferric compound but substitutes an artificial glaze consisting of copper, chromium, or pigment. The lifeless, shallow glazing of these products lack the luster and grandeur of the original celadon, as well as its subtle shading variations. Much of the esthetic beauty of celadon derives from its resemblance to the texture of jadeite, which appeals to the eye and hypnotizes the senses, producing a feeling of deep tranquillity. The famous poet Lu Yu of the Tang dynasty (A.D. 618-907) insisted that the full glory of celadon ware could be manifested and appreciated only through the subtle shades reflected in tea ware (Lu is author of the famous Tea Classic). One of his fellow Tang poets described the understated elegance of celadon with such phrases as ''celestial glow," "thin sheet of ice," “tender shoot of the lotus," and "tantalizing jadeite." Artisans of later generations continued emulating the apex of celadon art that was achieved in the Sung, but in more recent times the art has declined and come in danger of being lost.
